Hi-
I am new to this community. I found it when I was looking for a community to discuss Snarry. This community was pointed out. I thought that those of us who wanted to talk about Snarry and other stories could dicuuss it here. I thought I would get the ball rolling.

I have been reading a lot of infidelity fics lately The fics that I have been reading are:

Being Snape

Sadness of Eros

Between the Lines

The road to hell is paved with good intentions

Also there is an IJ community: hp_unfaithful

What are your feelings on infidelity fics?

The one thing I really like about the fics that I listed is that the are harsh. In all of them Harry is cheating on Ginny with Snape, so in a way there is a Snarry 'happily ever after'. The thing that I really like is that no one is at fault and every one is, and truly Harry is the most at fault. If that makes since? I think part of my new found interest in infidelity fics has to do with the epilogue in DH. If you want cannon then it almost has to be infidelity. I am also an angst fan.

I love infidelity fic in theory, but I haven't read a lot. I haven't read any of the ones you mentioned. I don't like intentional betrayal like in Dark Chocolate, or even "infidelity as betrayal" fic, but I like the angst, realism aspect of infidelity fic.

I liked The Blue Door (snape/remus) and A Bittersweet Potion series.

In the fics that I mentioned there really is not intentionality. Harry just "can't help it". I know that that is not a good excuse to cheat on your partner. I also should point out that Harry is cheating on Ginny with Snape. I don't know it that would make a difference.
You should try reading some of these. Even if you do not like infidelity fics these are well written

I love the angst factor in infidelity fics so I really like reading them.

"The thing that I really like is that no one is at fault and every one is, and truly Harry is the most at fault."

That is true for the first three of the above fics. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" is the sequel to "Between the Lines". I'm not sure that I'm happy with this sequel, though. It goes out of the way to show us that Ginny is somehow at fault herself and poor Harry was trying all the time to do the right thing. I just don't buy that.

Between the Lines is a bit diffrent from the other's by being told from Ginny's point of view. I really liked that. It made me sympathise with Ginny for once and I actually really don't like her very much.

I agree. I didn't know if I wanted to shout for joy that she destroyed Harry's things or be mad that she destroyed those things. I hate Ginny my self.

I am also a big angst fan. I also love the forbiddon nature of infidelity fics.

I do not mind infidelity fic -- these things happen, and if it's well written, it can be a powerful dramatic device. The thing I hate about them is that invariably Ginny (or Tonks, in the Snupin version of it) is HORRIBLY written, a one dimensional piece of cardboard -- either a shrew, or clueless, or snotty, or a slut who beds every man who comes her way*. That, however, is part of a larger problem with a lot of HP slash (and indeed, slash and yaoi in general) -- the fact that too many slash writers think they can get away with ignoring, brushing aside, dehumanizing, or maligning inconvenient female characters who get in the way of their OTP -- all it really is, of course, is terrible writing, and pure laziness. :/

* Of course, she's often only depicted as the slut; Harry USUALLY isn't judged that way, because he is suffering so for his inability to be with his twoo wuv.

Oh you have to read "Between the Lines". It is written from Ginny's POV, and she is a well rounded character in this story.

"Sadness of Eros" is also a great fic. It truly shows Harry (the cheater) in a very bad light. Harry is a slut and depicted that way, and even his twoo wuv can't stand that.

I'm not keen on infidelity fics where Snape and Harry are together and one of them cheats on the other. I usually avoid reading them.

Strangely enough though, I can handle Harry cheating on Ginny (depending on the depiction of Harry and Ginny), but for post DH epilogue stories I prefer it where he and Ginny have grown apart and are separated when Harry and Snape get together.

I like both actually. I think that both are true life, but Ginny and Harry growing apart is a little more romantic, I think. In those kind of stores no one gets hurt. Many times they end up one big happy family. I'm not so sure that that is true to life. I know many people want a story that has all of the lose ends tied up, but life is not neat that way. Another reason I do not like the epilogue in DH.

Infidelity fics make for good angst which is why I particularly enjoy them. I, too, love the forbidden nature involved, as well as the deception.

Out of the four you listed, I've only read Being Snape. Harry's obsession was so disturbing, it was brilliant. Gives me chills.

I liked how the author left it open for more to happen at the end.

If you liked "Being Snape then you would also like "Sadness of Eros". It is very well written.

I did like infidelity fics, as long as there was a happy ending, but then I think I had an overload at this year's Snarry Games. All the fics were bloody well written, and so good to read, but there was a huge amount of angst. "Sadness of Eros" was wow, but I don't think I could re-read it.

I'm currently reading a fic called "Situational Ethics" by Zega, http://hp.adultfanfiction.net/story.php?no=600014584&chapter=1 in which Snape cheats on his wife to be with Harry -- It is a WIP and Mpreg btw! But I think it is the first time in which I've read a fic where Snape cheats on a wife he actually likes, rather than it being Harry cheating on Ginny.

In reality I prefure it where Ginny was never involved with Harry. There is one by Sushi on WTP where Harry is pretty much happily married to Ginny yet still has sex with Snape, that was a really good read!

I don't usually like Severus cheating, but I would love to see how the author deals with Snape. Is he in character?

I will have to check out the stores you mentioned. Thank you.

I adore infidelity fics. *g* Particularly when one of our boys cheats on the other. The reason I like it is because it's real, and gritty, and happens to lovers the world over - human nature being what it is. That is my kind of angst. A well-written infidelity fic, whether it is central to the fic or just a passing mention, is very powerful, particularly if the boys work through it and survive it.

I'm not overfond of Harry-cheating-on-Ginny (family breakup) fics, though.

To me, Harry/Ginny canon compliant is separate from my Snarry, and I'd rather it be EWE or non DH compliant than have Harry be unfaithful to his wife. Even if Ginny is mary-sued into a freakish harpy/psycho just so we'd feel better about Hero!Harry cheating on his wife. That is, perhaps, a little too close to home for me.

i like a good snape stuffs up, then regrets hurting harry. And attempts to fix it, chasing harry and such.

in general, i just like it when snape is remorseful and wants harry bad.

(oh and i hate ginny/anybody...except ginny/draco...she can have the punce!)

I just have a hard time with Severus cheating. I understand that he is a mean, evil, bastard most of the time, in canon and fanfics, but he would give a Hufflepuff a run for there money in the loyalty department. It is not that I don't ever read it. I read just about any Snarry I can get my hand on. I have a better time understanding if Harry does it. He has been hurt many time by people he has loved, they have left him, turned away, died. It is common for someone with that kind of background to push the other person away before they get pushed away.

There are grades of my tolerance with infidelity:
1. I don't like it much.
2. I don't like it much but I can cope if it happens between Ginny and Harry. (I think the warnings should mention if it isn't about the Snarry pairing. It really makes difference for Snarry shippers)
3. I somehow endure it if Sev is the one who does the cheating. Happy end is a must, however, I love fluff :D
4. I know I'm obsessed and overprotective but I simply can't bear Sev beeing cheated :D No. Absolutly not. *indenial*

There were many people that said something smilier to that. I just have a hard time with Severus cheating. He just seems so loyal, and in canan we see that he was still in live with the same woman for over 20 years. She didn't love him back. How much more loyal would he be to someone who loved him back?

First, thank you jennybliss for starting this =D

About infidelity fics, I find it very hard to read one. It's just that intentional cruelty really doesn't do it for me. One fic that I loved was Dracofiend’s Dalliance, a Convenience: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/snarry_games/178637.html
What made me love it was infidelity was like an afterthought, it is happening and it is the main topic but it was in the background. If I find another fic like this, then... =D

You are so very welcome. It has really been fun!

It's just that intentional cruelty really doesn't do it for me.
The thing with the stores that I have listed is that Harry in his own mind is not intentionally trying to cheat, but really he is. I have never bought the line that they just could not help it. I should say that there is almost no reason to cheat in real life, and infidelity is just plan wrong, but this is fiction and this is a place that you can explore basic humane nature. In the stores that I have listed Harry is mostly panted as a jerk. I guess I said all that to say if you don't like those kinds of fics I would stay away from the ones that I have listed, but they are really well written. They are worth the read for that.

Would you consider this an infidelity fic: Troublesome Transition by mimiheart? It's like Harry leading a dual life here, keeping both separated. Hmm...

I don't really like infidelity fics. For me, fanfictions, movies and all that are there as tools to forget real life and the whole sets of problem for a bit.

Infidelity is too close for comfort. I can't say that I can be faithful to my partner forever, because who knows what might happen in the future? I guess I'm not an optimist.

Back to infidelity snarry fics.
If it's Harry cheating with Snape, it's okay for my snarry side. :)

But if they're in a relationship and one of them cheats, even if it's meaningless (like Dracofiend's "Dalliance, A Convenience"), it still hurts.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Which is why in fanfics, as well as in books/movies/anime etc, I always chose to read the happier/hopeful things.

While infidelity is something that happens everywhere and can be quite realistic (if written well of course) it is still something I would not like to read and will avoid if there is a warning, especially if it's within the snarry pairing.

If it's Harry cheating on Ginny (or Cho?)it might not bother me as much if they are not married yet etc but I do like Ginny and if there's a lot of Ginny bashing in the fic (or if she is generally portrayed as a bitch XD) I will not like it.

And err, I think that's all I have to say in the matter. Yeah.
